[This opening line perfectly summarises the candidate’s professional role. It should summarise your key value proposition and skillsets. It should also highlight any major/significant sections of your career history.]
- Audited international firms across a spectrum of industries including Construction, Trading, Shipping and Logistics. [If you specialise in any area, insert these specialisations into your Executive Summary. It helps set you apart from the next candidate in the recruiter’s pile of CVs. ]

Fluent in latest Hong Kong and International Financial Reporting Standards (HKFRS, IFRS). [It is critical for Auditors to possess fluency in the most updated Financial Standards and Regulations.]

- Evaluate audit results with clients and provide high-level recommendations and improvements on areas of concerns to enhance productivity and performance.

[These are the exact phrases used in the job advertisement you are applying for. Embed phrases used in the job advertisement into your CV to increase the chances of getting it past ATS scanners.]
[Achievements are projects or once-of] duties that have resulted in some value or significant outcome. They demonstrate why the company should hire you. Try to support them with objective numbers and statistics where possible; this helps contextualise why something you did was significant and just how significant it was.]

- Supported end-to-end audit for 3 subsidiaries of JKL Organization in Beijing, including reviewing of financial statements and revising financial figures in accordance with IFRS. Audit Professional CV Executive Summary
James begins his CV with an effective opening paragraph — his Executive Summary.
We recruiters read his Executive Summary first, which informs us all we need to know about him and his Audit career.
It’s concise, informative and simple to read. We immediately grasp James’ unique selling point and career narrative. This hooks our attention and allows us to make quick decisions.
Because it’s so informative and easy to read, we have a positive first impression of James, and we’re likely to call him in for an interview.
What does this mean for you?
This implies the Executive Summary is arguably the most important part in your CV. It is critical you write it effectively to evoke maximum impact.
How do you do this? We’ve an example below:
Of the two Audit CV Executive Summaries below, which do you think is more effective?
The second one, right? But what makes it better?
- James’ personal career narrative, from his years of experience, to the industries he has expertise in Auditing, and his knowledge of latest financial regulation standards. (Of course, you may choose to specify the exact standards you may be familiar with, such as FRS109, FRS116 etc.)
- A tailored Executive Summary — phrases such as “high-impact”, “value-adding external audit” and “solid expertise in accounting and financial principles” are likely adapted directly from the Job Description. This tells recruiters James has customised his CV according to their exact Job Description, instead of just mass-sending an identical CV to all open Audit roles. This reflects initiative, meticulousness and a keen desire for the role.
- James’ Key Achievements. Significant Highlights are akin to testimonials of your skills. Audit roles may be similar across firms – demonstrating prior projects you’ve worked on is a very effective way to differentiate yourself from other Auditors. Achievements show recruiters why the candidate should be hired. We’ll elaborate more on Achievements below.
In contrast, the first Executive Summary is poorly-written and very confusing.
It is filled with buzzwords in an attempt to impress recruiters (trust us, we know!), but in reality tells us very little about the candidate’s core skills or areas of expertise.
When writing your own Audit CV, avoid writing a generic Executive Summary! Your CV features your own career – make it all about yourself and your strengths!

Achievements and Work Experiences in Audit CVs
I get a really common question from Audit clients: “I have similar workscopes with that of my peers – how do I stand out?”
Truth is, auditors have very similar job responsibilities, especially at the entry to mid-level. Your days likely involve a lot of number crunching, testing and assessments, and report writing.
With workscopes that barely differ, how do you separate yourself from other peers in Audit?
Break your work experiences into 2 parts – daily workscopes and achievements.
Daily workscopes tell recruiters your day-to-day responsibilities. Achievements tell us projects that are unique to you. I’ll explain more below.
When writing your work experiences and daily workscopes, cluster them around responsibilities and high-level summaries. Support these with metrics to strengthen detail. Omit implied workscopes to save space.
Keep your CV short and sharp!
Here’s a sample Work Experiences section in an Auditor’s CV.
Here’s James’ one.
The latter Work Experience sample clearly reads so much better than the former.
- The second Work Experience example is clear. Each bulletpoint specifies one task. In contrast, the first line of the former example combines multiple tasks in the same line, perhaps in a bid to impress recruiters. However, we find it confusing and annoying. Don’t do this!
- Specific traits are explicitly identified. This makes it easier for us to identify if the candidate has the required skills for the role.
- Implied work experiences like attending department meetings are omitted. This saves space in the CV.
Don’t you see how a world of difference exists between the first and second versions?
Communicate your roles clearly in your CV when writing. Dedicate one bulletpoint to one workscope. This makes your CV clear and easy to read.

His Achievements help him stand out. Only James has successfully completed external audits for ABC Limited and XYZ Limited. He has also managed up to 15 clients simultaneously with Audit team, accruing profits of >HKD 100K. Few other auditors do exactly that.
These make a case for why we should call him in for an interview.
Great Achievements are the secret sauce to a successful Audit CV. As an Audit Professional, what kinds of Achievements could you write?
- Include projects which you have led or worked on, together with their resulting tangible business benefits. Projects and benefits could be:
- Companies you have audited, and their size (Market Cap, Valuation etc.)
- Size of Projects (in Dollar Cost, Time Frame etc.)
- Awards you have won
- Tie your projects to business benefits if possible. Hiring managers and employers want to see your results.
- One especially crucial area to talk about is your experience in leading a team, department or even a Project. Don’t leave out your team size! Describe any challenges you faced, and how you resolved these problems.
